Tournament previews

There are question marks against most of the market leaders for this week's ATP Eugene Korea Open Championship in Seoul, and it may pay not to ignore the obvious and stick with favourite Casper Ruud.

It has been a superb season for the Norwegian, who reached the finals of the French and US Opens and is the current world number two.

It has also been a very busy season for Ruud, who will have jetted to Korea from London, where he played in the Laver Cup at the weekend. But aside from that event and a Davis Cup appearance he has not been in action since the Flushing Meadows final and a first-round bye should ensure he turns out amply rested.

British number one Cameron Norrie is the second seed, but trails Ruud 3-0 in their personal series and both he and third seed Taylor Fritz also face a trek from London.

Canadian Denis Shapovalov is starting to refind his form but has won just five of his last 16 matches and still has only one ATP title to his name. Borna Coric is another who could be dangerous if producing his best, but is far from guaranteed to do so.

The WTA tournament in Tallinn looks a wide-open affair and that is reflected in the prices.

Home hope Anett Kontaveit is the top seed, although the world number three has struggled to match her early-season form since splitting with Russian coach Dmitry Tursunov and suffering from long-Covid in the summer.

Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia has benefitted from focusing more on singles play this year, breaking into the top 20 in the rankings and reaching her first WTA 1000 final in last month's Canadian Open. She took some notable scalps in that run including world number one Iga Swiatek and Olympic champion Belinda Bencic, who is a potential semi-final opponent in Estonia.
