Tournament preview

There are two spots up for grabs in the ATP Finals London going into this week's Rolex Paris Masters, but punters looking to bet on the final regular Masters Series 1,000 tournament should know that the title has gone to longshots in the last two seasons.

Karen Khachanov, who defends his trophy this year, and Jack Sock were the champions last year and in 2017, while Sock defeated qualifier Filip Krajinovic in the final two years ago and another qualifer, Jerzy Janowicz, made it through to the final Sunday in 2012.

It's a slight surprise that Rafael Nadal has decided to travel to Paris, although the Spaniard has made the final in Paris-Bercy only once.

Roger Federer, who has just won his tenth singles title in Basel, has gone all the way in the Paris indoor event on just one occasion, in 2011 when he was right on top of his game.

So it's no big deal to see Novak Djokovic installed as a hot favourite with the oddsmakers to add to his four titles in this competition.

The Serb has been going through the motions a little of late, however. He may be saving something for London, but it looks as if he’s finding winning titles harder work now than was the case in his pomp, before his career injury hiatus.

Those players still chasing berths in the ATP Finals include Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini, Roberto Bautista Agut, Gael Monfils, David Goffin, Fabio Fognini, Stan Wawrinka and Khachanov.

Of those players, Zverev is highly likely to gain a place unless he totally bombs this week, but punters should have a good think about who may join him.

Berrettini would be most deserving of a London place after a scintillating campaign which has seen him reach the US Open semi-finals, but just behind the Italian in the pecking order is a certain Gael Monfils.

Ironically, Monfils may not be that fussed about prospering in London, or even reaching the Finals for that measure. But after losing in Paris-Bercy finals in 2009 and 2010, the Parisian, who has played some of the best tennis of his career this year, could definitely have eyes on his home city prize.

Monfils may have to find a way past Benoit Paire, Federer, Zverev and Nadal just to reach the final, but Federer could be happy with his lot after his Basel triumph and the others may be beatable anyway.

La Monf is not in Djokovic's half of the draw so potential backers should also view that as a bonus.

Of the even bigger-priced players, Taylor Fritz could have a chance to shine and may go well against Frances Tiafoe and Stefanos Tsitsipas, but the Californian is a slow-burner who is clearly not rushing his career.

Fritz is in the top half of the draw, though, and the likelihood is that Djokovic and the increasingly impressive Daniil Medvedev will be hard to stop.

Borna Coric, a former reserve in the London Finals, is still fighting his way back to form after injury problems.
