Andreas Seppi was in good nick in the Australian Open last month, but the seasoned Italian could struggle to keep up the good work in the New York Open this week.
Steve Johnson, whom Seppi meets in round two of the indoor tournament, has not been at his peak in recent months but the Californian should still have enough to triumph.
Seppi’s straight-sets victory over Miomir Kecmanovic and five-set loss to Stan Wawrinka at Melbourne Park augurs well for a good season from the 35-year-old Dolomites native.
However, home support – not that there has been much of it in an event that has sold few tickets – could still count in Johnson’s favour and he can add to his first-round victory over Tennys Sandgren.
Vasek Pospisil, runner-up to Gael Monfils in Montpellier last week, is a 4-1 shot to upset top seed Daniil Medvedev in Rotterdam (live on Amazon Prime from 10am).
Canadian Pospisil is good enough to make Medvedev toil indoors, but continuing the good work could still prove difficult to do.
