ATP BMW Open preview

It's difficult to look past the top two seeds in this week's BMW Open, which starts in Munich on Monday.

Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud top the bill on the clay at the Iphitos Club and one of that pair could be driving away with a new BMW sports car by the end of the week.

Promising American Sebastian Korda travels to Bavaria, but while he looks a fine talent on all surfaces this may be a week for the red-court purists.

Outside chances would normally be given to South American trio Guido Pella, Federico Coria and Pablo Cuevas. But Pella has not been playing well enough to enter contention for a recommendation, Coria may not be good enough and even the admirably consistent Cuevas, 35, may be finding it tougher on his preferred surface given his advanced age.

Aslan Karatsev upset Novak Djokovic in the Belgrade semi-finals last week and the Russian can do little wrong this year. He could go well again, but may feel the effects of a busy schedule as the coming week goes on.

Zverev and Ruud, both handed byes into the second round, are likely to start well - Ruud possibly against Cuevas. But while Zverev is likely to take a lot of stopping, there was a lot to like about the way Norwegian Ruud made the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this month.

He looks a progressive performer and is worth an interest in his role as second favourite.

ATP Estoril Open preview

Denis Shapovalov tops the bill in the Estoril Open ahead of Cristian Garin, who does not return to Munich to defend his title there.

Garin, a confirmed clay-courter, is actually shading Shapovalov for favouritism in Portugal. The pair could go well but it may be worth chancing an outsider at the prices available.

Ugo Humbert and Kei Nishikori are the next highest-ranked performers, but clay may not be Humbert's forte while there may be one or two to stop Nishikori despite his resurgence.

Frances Tiafoe was edged out in the final of this tournament three years ago by local favourite Joao Sousa and the American, who enjoys playing on clay and is pretty useful on it too, could be worth chancing.

Tiafoe, who opens against Kevin Anderson before a possible second-round clash with Nishikori, has not been overlooked by the oddsmakers but still looks an option.

Eighth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has promise but the Spaniard looked out of sorts last week and is difficult to fancy.

Seventh seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas could prosper, but the Spaniard doesn't win enough titles to warrant a single-figure price.
