Day two preview

Botic Van De Zandschulp has been one of the game's big improvers over the last season and the Dutchman makes plenty of appeal as outsider to win his first-round clash in Montreal with Miomir Kecmanovic.

Van De Zandschulp made his breakthrough with a run to the US Open quarter-final last year and although an ATP Tour title still eludes him, he finished runner-up in Munich in May and it is surely only a matter of time until he claims the silverware he craves.

The 26-year-old got the better of Kecmanovic in the semi-final of that clay-court event in Germany and there is no reason to think he can’t uphold the form on a faster surface.

Kecmanovic was a semi-finalist in the Los Cabos Open last week but he is blighted by inconsistencies and, although he too loves the American hard courts, the layers may have shown him too much respect.

In the women’s event in Toronto, the standout bet on day two could be Daria Kasatkina to get the better of home favourite Bianca Andreescu.

Kasatkina came from a set behind against Shelby Rogers on her way to being crowned champion in San Jose on Saturday evening, the Russian having also defeated Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa on route to that title triumph in the States.

Providing Kasatkina is over her exploits and isn't put off by the quick turnaround, she should have the measure of Andreescu, who was beaten 6-2 6-2 by Rogers in the opening round of her San Jose adventure.
