Fernando Verdasco reached the final of the ATP Monte Carlo Masters in 2010, losing to Rafael Nadal, but the veteran Spaniard has been more miss than hit in Monaco over the years and he looks a vulnerable favourite against Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Verdasco has played six times on the Monaco clay since that final, winning just four matches in total over an eight-year period, while his present form doesn't point to a strong showing in the principality.

The 35-year-old skipped Indian Wells with a knee injury and then opted not to play Miami due to the birth of his first child. He returned at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech last week but was beaten in three by lowly-ranked compatriot Adrian Menendez-Maceiras.

He has lost to players outside the top 40 in Qatar, Sofia and Marseille this year and could also fall victim to Herbert, who reached the final of the Open Sud de France and may have a fitness edge over his opponent.

At his best, Verdasco would be a strong favourite to record a victory, but it is apparent that he's some way shy of his peak and the Frenchman could take advantage.

Recommendation
P-H Herbert
