The rain is playing havoc with the scheduling this week and after two washout days, the Notting­ham Open outdoor grass-court event took the decision to start its first-round matches on indoor hard courts on Wednesday.

Thankfully, events in Stuttgart and Den Bosch are a little nearer to completion after witnessing more play than in the UK and the best bet for day four could be brilliant youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime to see off seasoned Gilles Simon in the Mercedes Cup.

Auger-Aliassime has got the lot as a player and it will be a delight to see what he achieves in the next few years.

Simon, a 4-6 6-2 6-3 victor over Peter Gojowczyk in round one, is no mug on grass him­self and this is likely to be a tough test for both players. The Frenchman has also been in generally fine form in recent seasons too.

However, Auger-Aliassime is so talented that oddsmakers are probably right to make him favourite. The Canadian, who opened with a 7-5 6-3 victory over Ernests Gulbis, has already been supported and the plunge could be well founded.
