Tournament preview

The recent heroics of Stefanos Tsitsipas have seen him emerge as arguably Rafael Nadal’s biggest challenger at the upcoming French Open, and the rising Greek star can show why by justifying tournament favouritism in Lyon.

The world number five defeated red-hot Russian Andrey Rublev on the clay of Monte Carlo last month to claim his first Masters 1000 crown, and followed that up with a run to the final in Barcelona.

Tsitsipas had outclassed Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jannik Sinner in straight-sets before bumping into a determined Nadal, who prevailed 7-5 in a thrilling decider to land his record 12th Barcelona title.

That strengthened the case that Tsitsipas can mix it with the game’s elite on the slower surface and although he subsequently disappointed in Madrid, last week’s endeavour in Rome was much more like it.

The 22-year-old was beaten by world number one Novak Djokovic in his last-eight duel in Italy, but the Greek star had been a set and a break to the good when rain forced play to a halt before reconvening the next day.

Even so, Tsitsipas had previously accounted for in-form Italian Matteo Berrettini, who had reached back-to-back finals in Serbia and Madrid, so is clearly thriving.

And in a slightly weaker field, with an advantageous draw to work with, Tsitsipas ought to take all the beating.

While some may be surprised to see the Athens man heading the market in a clay event featuring Dominic Thiem, the Austrian has a much tougher route to the final.

Thiem is drawn in the same half as Sinner, Aslan Karatsev, Diego Schwartzman, Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Karen Khachanov, which won’t make things easy for him.

Tsitsipas has a much smoother passage. The second seed receives a first-round bye and, in truth, there should be few concerns for him before a potential semi-final showdown with Auger-Aliassime, who he has beaten in each of their last four meetings.
