Preview

Roger Federer has another go at returning from lockdown in the Geneva Open on clay this week and the great man's second stab at competitive action this season could go better than his first.

Federer played okay in two outings on the Doha hard courts in March. But it was clear that the Swiss legend was lacking in fitness so he went back home in the knowledge that while the shots were still there after his pandemic-enforced break, there was much to work on.

Expect a leaner, fitter Federer this week - he has been spending a lot of time walking in the Alps. However, punters should remember that the top seed's ulterior motive is to play some clay events in order to get in better condition for Wimbledon at the end of next month.

Federer may have enough to find a way past possible opponents such as Pablo Andujar and maybe even Cristian Garin in his homeland. But he's unlikely to be busting a gut for the title this week, especially with talented players such as Denis Shapovalov and Casper Ruud, seeded second and third respectively, competing.

Federer could win a match or three in the top half of the draw. However, it may pay outright punters to check out the bottom half. Grigor Dimitrov and Fabio Fognini are seeded in that section, but it could pay to take a chance that the usually consistent Laslo Djere bounces back to title-winning form in Geneva.

The Serb may not be performing at his absolute peak and is without a trophy of note this season, but it may not be long before Djere adds to his triumphs in Rio de Janeiro in 2019 and Sardinia in 2020.

Djere will have to be on top of his game from the outset with matches against Thiago Monteiro and then possibly Fognini and Shapovalov on the horizon. But at or near his best, he's more than capable of causing damage on clay in a field of this strength and can be chanced.

There are also WTA tournaments due to start in Belgrade and Parma on Sunday provisionally and bookmakers will have prices available when the draws are released.
