Novak Djokovic to win the ATP Finals

Tournament preview

Like many of the men’s showpiece events on hard terrain, the field can often be whittled down to just two and the ATP Finals, which has moved to Turin this year, should prove no different with fierce rivals Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev looking a cut above the opposition.

Medvedev got his first taste of Grand Slam silverware at Djokovic’s expense in the US Open final in September but the Serb hit back in the Paris Masters last week, coming from a set down in the final to remind the Russian who is still world number one.

This is quickly becoming the biggest rivalry in the men's game and another title decider is on the cards, although Djokovic is a worthy favourite to uphold the French form.

Good draws win tournaments and this looks a gilt-edged opportunity for Djokovic to dominate the Green Group with debutant Casper Ruud having to overcome his inexperience and Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev both struggling to find their early-season form.

Norwegian star Ruud is a rising force and has claimed five titles this year, but he is unlikely to land a glove on Djokovic. Rublev, meanwhile, has lost five of his last seven matches, including straight-set defeats to Botic van de Zandschulp and Taylor Fritz in successive tournaments.

Tsitsipas, who was victorious in this tournament in London two years ago, looks the biggest threat but he too has a point to prove after retiring hurt from his Paris Masters second-round clash with Alexei Popyrin.

However, things look a little tougher for Medvedev, who will square up against Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini and Hubert Hurkacz in the Red Group.

Zverev was crowned ATP Finals champion in 2018 and has enjoyed a stellar season, clinching five titles - four on a hard court - including his Olympic gold-medal triumph in Tokyo in July.

Powerful Pole Hurkacz, a semi-finalist in Paris-Bercy, has forced a deciding set in each of his two meetings with Medvedev and is progressing nicely, while Berrettini was runner-up at Wimbledon so can’t be written off lightly.

Therefore, with Medvedev expected to have to work harder than Djokovic to reach the knockout stage at Pala Alpitour, the 20-time Grand Slam champion gets the nod.
