Gael Monfils looks as if he is getting down to his day job this year and the Frenchman, winner in Rotterdam last month, can reach the final of the Dubai Championship with victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Monfils played a third set in his 6-1 6-7 6-2 win over qualifier Ricardas Berankis but that was a pretty good result against an opponent who can be dangerous on his day.

It looked as if being busy might count against Monfils and Tsitsipas this week, but the pair have plugged on creditably on the way to reaching the last four.

Tsitsipas did hugely well winning in Marseille last Sunday. Never mind the fact the Greek was the top seed – success in a French indoor tournament, which usually go the way of homeland players, is a feat in itself.

Of the pair, Tsitsipas is likely to be more tired. He has been involved competitively for almost two weeks and a date with the super-fit Monfils is far from ideal.

Monfils was being backed as soon as the prices went up but a shade of odds-on about a French triumph is hard to quibble with.

In Sao Paulo, the oddsmakers are finding it difficult to split quarter-final rivals Leonardo Mayer and Chilean Christian Garin, although the Argentinian was coming in for some support.

Guido Pella is a hot favourite to see off his fellow Argentinian Marco Trungelliti.
