The oddsmakers give Denis Kudla little chance of defeating Matteo Berrettini in his Dubai Champ­ion­ship opener, but the American remains a talented performer on fast courts who at his peak could have enough to deny the favourite.

Kudla chose to play the recent European indoor circuit rather than contest homeland events in New York and Delray Beach.

The move brought him little success, which was not entirely surprising given that indoor tennis doesn't play to the Ukrainian-born 26-year-old's strengths.

However, Kudla could be better suited to competing outdoors in the United Arab Emirates and punters who have gone in early for Berrettini may have taken only the American's recent form into account.

At his best, Kudla is still capable of going deep in Masters Series 1,000 events so he should not fear Berrettini.

Kudla, who leads their series 2-1, took Diego Schwartz­man to five sets in the Australian Open and is worth a punt to win at least a set in his Dubai curtain-raiser.

Gael Monfils leads Marin Cilic 3-0 but that has not stopped punters siding with the Croat against the Rotterdam champion.
