Rafael Nadal was unable to make a winning return to action at last week’s Monte Carlo Masters, but bookmakers are expecting the King of Clay to right those wrongs and secure a 12th Barcelona Open title.

Despite suffering a quarter-final exit to Andrey Rublev, Nadal is odds-on to reign supreme back on home soil.

The super Spaniard may justify those skinny quotes, but he will need to have come on plenty for that recent spin and there is an interesting each-way alternative in the bottom half of the draw in the shape of rising Italian star Jannik Sinner.

The exertions of Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who duelled for title supremacy in Monte Carlo on Sunday, may leave them more vulnerable than usual and Sinner is certainly talented enough to capitalise.

Although both of his career successes to date have come on a hard court, Sinner showed his versatility when reaching the quarter-finals at last year’s French Open.

The 19-year-old receives a first-round bye and he would be fancied to book a quarter-final spot at the expense of Roberto Bautista Agut, whose best results have come on a faster surface. At decent odds, he rates a lively outsider.

There is also men’s action taking place in Belgrade, where world number one and home favourite Novak Djokovic should have few concerns securing the silverware in a tournament lacking depth.
