Tournament previews

The ATP Tour stars are out in force this week and Kazakhstan has benefited by attracting five of the world’s top ten for the Astana Open.

Being upgraded to an ATP 500 event for the first time has helped lure a stellar cast with Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas all involved.

Newly-crowned world number one Alcaraz is out to show there was no fluke about his US Open victory while Djokovic, who currently finds himself at world number seven, will be determined to claw his way back to the top.

However, 19-year-old Spanish sensation Alcaraz is far from the finished article and it may take time before he becomes a dominant force. Djokovic, on the other hand, was battling it out with Marin Cilic for title honours in Tel Aviv on Sunday so is worth opposing.

Three defeats from six matches have highlighted Tsitsipas’s inconsistencies, while out-of-sorts Medvedev lost his opening game to Stan Wawrinka in Metz last time out, so there is potential for an upset.

Two players who make an each-way appeal are Felix Auger Aliassime and Hubert Hurkacz.

If there are fatigue concerns surrounding Djokovic then Auger Aliassime, who defeated the Serb 6-3 7-6 at the Laver Cup at the end of September, has the game and draw to capitalise.

Similarly, if Alcaraz falters in the top half then Hurkacz, who has won a ATP Masters 1000 event and was a semi-finalist on his comeback in Metz, could also profit at a big price.

Another competitive ATP event takes place in Tokyo but as expected the market is dominated by world number two Casper Ruud and revitalised Australian Nick Kyrgios.

Polish world number one Iga Swiatek makes her return and headlines a strong field in Ostrava but there is a weaker look to the line-up in Monastir, where home favourite Ons Jabuer could stamp her authority.

Having made the last two Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, Jabeur has worked hard to drive the women's game in Africa and will surely be determined to make her home faithful proud in Tunisia.

Veronika Kudermetova is the tournament’s second seed so Jabeur may hold a significant class edge and is fully expected to justify favouritism.
