Tournament preview
Ronnie O'Sullivan has not claimed silverware since winning his sixth World Championship title in 2020, but the Rocket could be set for lift-off at the World Grand Prix in Coventry, where the action starts on Monday.
O'Sullivan landed this prize in 2018 and a generous draw, which is determined by a one-year ranking list, could see him back in the winner's enclosure.
The 46-year-old opens against Andy Hicks before a potential second-round duel with Gary Wilson or Hossein Vafaei and he is drawn on the opposite half to Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, Mark Allen, Kyren Wilson, John Higgins and Yan Bingtao.
In fact, there should be few concerns for O'Sullivan before the final and, if in the mood to deliver, he ought to tee up a title decider.
The short early format is of some concern, but priced at 5-1 outright O'Sullivan certainly represents value given that Mark Williams, Jack Lisowski, Dave Gilbert and Luca Brecel look his biggest obstacles before the final.
Three short-priced favourites dominate the Monday card and while Kyren Wilson and recent UK Championship hero Zhao Xintong should see off Anthony Hamilton and Martin Gould respectively, Yan Bingtao may be in for a tougher time.
The Chinese sensation faces Mark King, who is a gritty customer and in decent nick after his semi-final appearance at the English Open.
King, a former ranking event winner, is unlikely to go down without a fight so backing over 5.5 frames in his best-of-seven battle with Bingtao makes plenty of appeal.
Bingtao was thrashed 4-1 by Hammad Miah at the Scottish Open and the Chinese ace could be tested by King, who followed his English Open heroics with a run to the third round of the UK Championship where he lost 6-3 to O’Sullivan.
At odds-against, Matthew Selt should also be backed to get the better of Jimmy Robertson.
Selt should arguably be favourite on the back of his quarter-final run at the Scottish Open last week and his last-16 berth at the UK Championship in York, where he beat Joe Perry and Judd Trump.
