The opening round of the UK Championship saw seven seeds sent packing and there could be a few surprises in store in Thursday’s second-round encounters.

Neil Robertson was one of the big names to crash out at the first hurdle at the York Barbican and his conqueror Joe Perry may be a player worth keeping on side.

Perry readily brushed aside his good pal Robertson 6-2, a result which followed impressive qualifying successes over Yuan Sijun and Graeme Dott.

The Gentleman whitewashed Dott in his final qualifier, making knocks of 134, 102, 86 and 77, and that scoring prowess continued against Robertson as he added another century and two further 80 breaks.

And there’s no reason to desert him now against world number 14 Bingham who, despite winning 6-2 in his opener over Liam Highfield, constructed only one break over 60.

Ball-Run has had an inconsistent start to the season - he was beaten 4-0 by David Lilley in Northern Ireland in his final match before this event - and he looks a vulnerable favourite.

Elsewhere, three-time UK Champion Ding Junhui should have the beating of Jamie Clarke, but Jack Lisowski’s clash with Hossein Vafaei and Judd Trump’s meeting with Shaun Murphy are trappy affairs.
