Anthony McGill v Liam Highfield

Anthony McGill hasn't been at his best in the lead-up to the Betfred World Championship but the methodical Scot is sure to have practised hard for the Crucible after having a good deal of success in Sheffield in recent years.

McGill, who is often seen at his best in longer matches, is the obvious favourite but it wouldn't do to rule out Liam Highfield, his first-round opponent this year, because the Swindon cueman has been making steady progress in recent campaigns.

It's 4-2 to McGill in their personal series but the pair's last four clashes have been reasonably competitive with Highfield taking their last rumble, albeit six years ago.

McGill is the more prolific high breakmaker but Highfield is no stranger to the odd big compilation himself, so it may be worth backing the outsider to at least make a match of it.

Mark Williams v Michael White

Mark Williams is all the rage for his all-Welsh last-32 opener against his good friend Michael White but, while the veteran will probably win the day, don't rule out the talented outsider.

This is a joyous occasion with White who, like Mark Selby, has battled mental health problems, returning as an amateur to the Crucible.

But White is a former top-16 player, so it's far from a gimme for three-time world champion Williams, who made a couple of 147 maximum breaks at a south Wales club night last week.

Both players are in decent nick and White, who leads 5-3 in previous meetings, saw off Fraser Patrick, Martin O'Donnell, Mark King and Jordan Brown to earn a return to the sport's flagship finals.

So with Williams unlikely to embarrass his compatriot, it may be worth backing the outsider with a handicap start of 3.5 frames.
