Bookmakers are struggling to separate Iran and Ireland in their World Cup opener and with tournament favourites England in their group it is vital for both to get off to a winning start.

Ireland have experience on their side with Ken Doherty and Fergal O’Brien representing them, but both players are coming towards the end of their careers and the Iranian pairing of Hossein Vafaei and Soheil Vahedi look more promising.

Vafaei has already made two ranking event semi-finals at 24. He is a class act and is getting better with each season on tour.

Vahedi is the weaker player, but is improving and sharp having had to come through Q School in May to earn a two-year tour card.

Two years ago the Vafaei-Vahedi pairing made the quarter-finals in Wuxi, beating Neil Robertson’s Australia in their group, while Ireland have failed to reach the knockout stages at the last two attempts.

Recommendation
Iran

2pts 10-11 general
