There's a prompt start to the German Masters on Wednesday and early match bettors could try to seek out some value on the first-round clash between Shaun Murphy and Jamie O'Neill in Milton Keynes.

Murphy is showing signs of rediscovering some better form. But while the Magician will hope to dominate the table-time against his lower-ranked opponent, O'Neill is a useful player who is arguably a shade underrated by the oddsmakers.

He has already been advised as outright value at 500-1 - should he find a way to upset Murphy the draw would open up nicely for the Northamptonshire-based potter. But formwise there is hope because O'Neill's game looked in good order when qualifying for this event with fine 5-3 victories over talented duo Daniel Wells and Zhao Xintong.

O'Neill made breaks of 131, 63 and 57 against Wells and 91, 79 and 55 against Zhao, so if the self-belief exists he is capable of making life tough for Murphy.

A couple of firms offer O'Neill at backable odds with a handicap start of 3.5 frames in their best-of-nine-frames opener and that could afford an opening for punters.

Jak Jones is good enough to make life difficult for Liang Wenbo, but the Chinese ace remains a decent match-player so punters could not be confidence if siding with the Welshman with a handicap start of 2.5 frames.
