Seasoned cueman Day looks ready to end Belgian's run

There are 30 English Open first-round matches for punters to get stuck into on day two and bookmakers may have taken their eye off the ball in rating Ryan Day 10-11 to beat Luca Brecel.

Day, who possesses bags of class, finally landed his first ranking title when winning the Riga Masters in June. Dynamite is 37-years-old but that maiden crown could help him return to the sort of form that saw him reach number six in the world in the 2009-10 season.

The Welshman was beaten by Peter Lines in the European Masters earlier this month, but prior to that he knocked in five breaks of more than 50 in a command­ing 6-1 win over Chen Zifan in the International Championship qualifiers.

He also dropped just one frame in his recent Shang­hai Masters qualifier which suggests the Pontycymer potter is in decent nick and could be primed for a good run this week.

Brecel looks to be coming of age and his China Championship title triumph in August and World Open semi-final placing in September suggests the Belgian is closing in on the sport's top table.

However, he will need to be at his best to see off a high-quality, experienced breakbuilder like Day and Brecel may be a little overrated by the layers.

Elsewhere, Neil Robertson should have few worries against Welsh youngster Billy Joe Castle, while Mark Selby opens his title tilt against determined Scot Scott Donaldson.
