Match preview

Old foes Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Williams meet once again in the quarter-finals of the Tour Championships and the Rocket’s record in this event and advantage in the head-to-head makes him hard to look past.

O’Sullivan won the inaugural Tour Championship in 2019 and after failing to qualify in 2020 he reached the final again last year, losing out 10-4 to Neil Robertson.

In contrast, Williams has just one previous appearance in the tournament, losing his only game in 2019 to Judd Trump.

The Welshman would also have liked to go to Llandudno in better form. But he has lost three of his last four matches, failing to make inroads at the Welsh Open and Turkish Masters.

O’Sullivan, on the other hand, reached the final of the European Masters recently and also managed three victories at the Welsh Open.

The Rocket has won six of his last eight clashes against Williams, including a comprehensive 6-1 success the last time they met.

The 46-year-old will be chasing a strong performance this week to set him up for the World Championship, in which he will be eyeing a seventh title.

Given his solid record at the tournament and his superior recent form, O’Sullivan is fancied to successfully concede his opponent a start of 2.5 frames on the handicap.
