Tuesday's first-round matches

There’s an absolutely cracking Players Championship first-round clash between Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump on Tuesday evening.

The Rocket’s powers may be on the wane but the Chigwell cueman has still won the World Grand Prix, made the semi-finals of the Scottish and English Opens and the quarter-final of the UK Championship this season.

Of course, we have come to expect more from snooker’s greatest ever, but it’s not as if O’Sullivan is being dumped out in the early stages of events on a regular basis.

That is something that has been happening to Trump this term. The Ace put in disappointing efforts in the UK Championship, World Grand Prix and British and Scottish Opens and the Bristol potter hasn’t made it past the quarter-finals of a ranking event this season.

Clearly, Trump has the class to bounce back at any time but he doesn’t seem to be playing well enough to justify quotes of 4-6.

There’s an opportunity to support a player who is still capable of blasting any opponent off the baize and the 6-5 on offer about O’Sullivan is too good to miss.

David Gilbert takes on Yan Bingtao, snooker’s rising star Zhao Xintong faces Barry Hawkins and Mark Allen and Ricky Walden get it on in the day’s other first-round contests.
