Tournament preview
The first Triple Crown event of 2023 begins on Sunday when snooker’s top potters gather at Alexandra Palace for the prestigious Masters.
Seven-time champion and six-time runner-up Ronnie O’Sullivan heads the betting and the Rocket looks to hold strong claims of landing a remarkable eighth Masters crown.
O’Sullivan looked as good as ever when winning the Champion of Champions this season and you can draw a line through the Rocket’s efforts in low-key ranking events this term. His motivation levels will be at their peak for a Triple Crown event at Ally Pally, but offers of 4-1 look a little too short.
Judd Trump and Neil Robertson are 9-2 joint second-favourites and could clash in the semi-final. Trump’s chances appear stronger than those of defending champion Robertson, who is yet to make a final of a ranking event this season.
Trump is on course for a second-round clash with 2020 Masters champion Mark Allen and the Northern Irishman has looked in excellent touch this term. The top half of the draw also contains Shaun Murphy, Barry Hawkins and Kyren Wilson, and given the calibre of cueman in that section, the bottom section looks the place to pick a contender.
O’Sullivan is the dominant force in the bottom half but Jack Lisowski looks the value play against the Rocket. Lisowski opens up against John Higgins and, while the Scot remain a top-level performer, the Wizard of Wishaw has suffered a string of early exits from ranking events this season.
Mark Selby or Hossein Vafaei would await Jackpot should he beat Higgins, and while punters will need the best version of Lisowski to get a deep run, there may be a better chance of that than offers of 20-1 suggest.
Lisowski was a semi-finalist at the UK Championships this season and his chances of Masters glory appear to have been a little underrated.
He isn’t the most consistent cueman on tour but he is capable of elite-level snooker and only four victories are needed to take home the Masters title.
There is hope that the Gloucester potter can maintain his best over what is a fairly short format and punters can cash in by backing Jackpot.
