Masters final preview
The Masters has reached its final stage with snooker’s top players whittled down to just two, with Mark Williams and Judd Trump set to slug it out for the title at Alexandra Palace.
The pair last met in an instant classic at the Crucible last year, where Trump edged a thrilling World Championship semi-final 17-16.
Williams fought back from 9-2 and 11-4 down on that occasion and showed plenty of that grit and determination in this year’s Masters, battling back from 3-0 down to overcome Ronnie O’Sullivan for the first time in eight years in the quarter-final.
Trump has also had to scrap to reach this stage and almost fell at the first hurdle where he came from 5-3 down to sneak past Ryan Day in a cagey affair.
The 33-year-old came out on top of a similarly dramatic clash in the quarter-finals after beating Barry Hawkins 6-5 and he will need to improve on those performances to secure his second Masters crown.
Williams secured a whitewash victory over Trump’s close friend Jack Lisowski in the semi-final and may be able to follow up with another win here to take his first Masters title since 2003.
The 47-year-old is more likely to punish Trump’s mistakes than his previous opponents did and he has been in much better form than the Bristolian throughout this competition.
While this looks likely to be a competitive clash, Williams has been in much better form than Trump and makes plenty of appeal at the prices.
