Group One and Eight preview

Former world champion Stuart Bingham is an odds-on favourite to top the charts in Group One of the Championship League but the presence of Ricky Walden makes his task tougher than the prices imply.

Bingham is a six-time ranking event winner who has developed into one of the toughest match players on tour, but a combination of the best-of-four format and a lack of match practice is enough to swerve the short price.

Joe Perry, Kyren Wilson, Jack Liswoski and Mark Selby are just four group favourites to have let their backers down already this week and Bingham may be another a high-profile casualty.

Injuries have halted Walden’s progress in recent seasons but he remains a classy operator and signs were positive prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Walnut, who has won three ranking event titles, reached the quarter-finals at the English Open and the Paul Hunter Classic and is a regular competitor in the other Championship League.

Jordan Brown looks vulnerable in this line-up, but at 14-1 punters could do worse than have a small saver on outsider of the quartet, Jamie Clarke.

The Welshman has reached the semi-final and the fourth round from two appearances in the snooker shoot-out and this shorter format could bridge the gulf in class between him and the rest.

Group Eight is less appealing from a betting perspective with no standout performer.

Ben Woollaston, Jimmy Robertson and Liam Highfield are three evenly-matched players and there is little margin for error in each of their prices. Thor Chuan Leong makes up the numbers in the group.
