L Walker to win Group Five

Group preview

Mark Selby starts his Championship League campaign on Thursday afternoon and the bookmakers clearly weren't in a jovial mood when they made The Jester a 4-7 poke.

Selby's credentials are clear but that price looks plenty short enough given the format of this event.

Liang Wenbo is next best in Group Five but it's hard to know how much time the Chinese potter will have spent on the table during lockdown and he can be ignored at 14-5.

Lee Walker is rated a 14-1 shot by BoyleSports and he's worth taking a chance on at a huge price.

It's fair to say that Walker is one of the more methodical players on tour but you can be sure that he will scrap for every point on offer in this event.

The Welshman may not be in the class of Selby, or even Wenbo, but a run to the quarter-finals of the English Open earlier this year demonstrated that he can produce some quality performances and he may have been underestimated by the layers.

Group 14 jolly Gary Wilson should justify his position at the head of the market.

Wilson has the scoring power to compete with the best on tour and if he finds his rhythm in the balls he could make short work of John Astley and Mitchell Mann.

Classy Welshman Matthew Stevens was likely to offer more resistance to the Tyneside Terror but he has pulled out and been replaced by Gerard Greene.
