First-round preview

There's plenty of English Open action for punters to get stuck into with the likes of Mark Williams, Mark Allen, Kyren Wilson and Neil Robertson all starting their title bids in Crawley.

Away from the big hitters the layers are struggling to split David Grace and Michael Georgiou and perhaps that underrates the chances of Georgiou progressing to round two.

The pair clashed in the World Open qualifiers earlier this month and Georgiou ran out a 5-2 winner. It's obviously unwise to put too much emphasis on the result of one match, but the Forest Hill man opened up 8-13 for that contest, and while it's only the best of seven frames in Crawley, it's difficult to see why there's such a narrowing of the odds.

It was encouraging for Georgiou that he made knocks of 125, 67, 62 and 54 against Grace and that extra bit of scoring power should see the Pride of Cyprus into round two.

Sam Baird hasn't had many wins to shout about this season but the Blade has had some tough draws and is arguably in better nick than his results suggest.

There was plenty to like about Baird's 5-3 win over Peter Ebdon in the first round of the China Championship and the Devon potter gave it a good go before losing 5-4 to Yan Bingtao in round two.

Back in easier company against Daniel Wells the odds-against quotes about Baird look worth a wager.
