Tournament preview

The World Snooker Tour gallops into Cheltenham this week for the Coral World Grand Prix and at 50-1 Gary Wilson looks a value selection to clear the hurdles in front of him.

Wilson is a high-quality break-builder and while he may not have the consistency of some of snooker's big-hitters he showed he can compete with the best when making the semi-finals of the European Masters last month.

The Wallsend man was beaten 5-1 by Zhao Xintong at the last-16 stage of last week's German Masters, but his three wins in that tournament yielded 14 knocks of more than 50 and five centuries and that bodes well for his chances of a big run at Cheltenham.

Wilson opens up against Zhou Yuelong and he looks to have a decent draw in a section where the three top seeds are Shaun Murphy, Stephen Maguire and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.

Should Wilson make it to the quarter-finals he could meet Tom Ford, who is also stationed in the fourth quarter, and while they can't both make the final it's worth having a small play at 150-1 on the Leicester man.

Ford is highly inconsistent but he has some serious talent and firepower at his disposal. The Glen Parva cueman has hit five maximum breaks in his career, bettered by only five players in the history of the game, and he is sweating on a share of a £1 million bonus after knocking in two 147s this season.

Maguire is Ford's first-round opponent and a win would set up a clash with either Matt Selt or Un-Nooh. There's no reason for Ford to fear any of those opponents and if he finds his best form this week he could be prove to be a match for anyone in the event.
