Cao Yupeng has shown what he is capable of this season and the Chinese ace can continue his China Open title tilt with a victory over David Gilbert in Beijing.

Cao upset Luca Brecel 6-4 in his opener at the Olympic gymnasium and after a campaign in which he has reached the finals of the Scottish and Gibraltar Opens and the semi-finals of the European Masters, nobody would begrudge him victory in the most lucrative overseas tournament ever staged.

There was nothing wrong with his break-building in round one as he posted runs of 135, 72, 63, 62 and 60 on the way to dumping Brecel.

Gilbert saw off Mike Dunn 6-3 in an unremarkable match.

Early risers can consider backing Lyu Haotian to defeat Fergal O'Brien, but the veteran Dubliner was cueing well in his 6-5 victory over Stephen Maguire, against whom he made successive breaks of 87, 71 and 79.

Newly-crowned World Federation champion Luo Honghao continues to impress and the teenager should beat Duane Jones, while Ronnie O'Sullivan made a 147 in a 6-2 loss to Elliot Slessor.
