Third-round preview

Michael White had to dig deep to see off the threat of Jamie O’Neill in his Betfred World Championship second-round qualifier, but there’s more than a hint that he may have turned a corner in his game after a prolonged lull and a place at the Crucible Theatre could be there for the taking in the coming days.

Welsh ace White is a former top-16 performer and the fact he held, and contended for, a regular place in the elite for such a sustained period suggests that is where he belongs.

His next task is against Noppon Saengkham and while the popular Thai merits respect for the way he has performed in recent campaigns, he’s up against a special talent in White.

It’s a surprise to see White priced so big for this outing and the chance to support him can be taken.

Jackson Page posted a tidy 6-2 victory over Harvey Chandler and White’s compatriot can again be backed to surprise Scott Donaldson.

Scotsman Donaldson has enjoyed a fine time of it which culminated in a title triumph in the first of this season’s Championship League events.

The methodical Perth native is still improving, but that doesn’t mean he is safe against a player of Page’s promise.

In other matches that could be closer than the betting suggests, Jimmy White, Allan Taylor and Wu Yize are worth interests against respective foes Rob Milkins, Matt Selt and Alan McManus.

Taylor has been hitting the heights of late. He has secured his main-tour card for two seasons and made runs of 145, 134, 112, 98 and 78 in a 6-1 win over Lee Walker on Thursday.
