Saturday preview

Anyone wondering why they should watch the Bundesliga this season could get their answer in the first Saturday evening game of the campaign between Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.

Having finished second and third last term, Dortmund and Leverkusen know where the net is and their two league meetings in 2021-22 featured a total of 14 goals.

Those games were by no means anomalies either. Dortmund's league fixtures averaged 4.03 goals per game last term and Leverkusen's 3.74.

Erling Haaland departed the Signal Iduna Park this summer but Dortmund have reinforced their attack with the next brightest star in Europe, Karim Adeyemi.

Patrik Schick, who thumped in 24 Bundesliga goals last term, should also feature for Leverkusen, while Dortmund's rearguard will be missing new addition Niklas Sule.

The consensus in Germany is that this season could be the most open title race in years, so these sides will be eager to show their class and could play out a humdinger.

As many as eight Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in Strasbourg striker Ludovic Ajorque and the 6ft 6in forward can show why by scoring in his side's Ligue 1 opener against Monaco.

The 28-year-old has hit a double-figure goal tally in all competitions in each of his four seasons at the club and has looked sharp in pre-season, scoring against Brentford.

One club who could be in for a tough campaign are Bundesliga outfit Bochum, who finished 13th last term but have lost last season's top two scorers in all competitions Sebastian Polter and Milos Pantovic.

Defender Maxim Leitsch also departed for Mainz and his new club are worth backing in the draw-no-bet market against Bochum on Saturday.

Mainz finished a respectable eighth last term and ended the campaign strongly with wins over Hertha Berlin and Bayern Munich in two of their last three matches.
