A move to professionalism in the Welsh set-up this year paid off as the team took third place in the Six Nations, their best finish since 2009, and they can open their World Cup campaign with a win over Scotland.

A 27-20 defeat to the Scots in the 2021 Six Nations playoffs was turned into a 24-19 home victory for the Welsh in this season's tournament, although there is every reason to suspect Sunday's clash in Whangarei will be just as close.

Wales and Scotland find themselves in a pool with New Zealand and Australia, both ranked above them, and defeat in this opener will make it difficult to claim a quarter-final spot.

The Welsh are the slenderest of favourites but there may be some value to be had by backing them for a narrow success.
