Champions Cup preview

Munster’s trip to Toulouse is the standout fixture in the Champions Cup on Sunday but presents a tricky test not only for the visitors but punters alike.

A 15-point handicap is a sizeable one for a Munster team coming into form and Graham Rowntree has selected a side capable of keeping the Stade Ernest-Wallon contest close if they need a result.

However, if results elsewhere in Pool B go Munster’s way then they may already be through to the knockout stage by the time they kick off against a Toulouse side who beat them at Thomond Park.

Toulouse themselves may not need a result if a home last-16 tie is in the bag and with so much uncertainty, better betting prospects may lie elsewhere.

London Irish’s hopes of Champions Cup progress were ended by a home defeat to the Stormers last weekend but that doesn’t mean they will necessarily be cannon fodder for a Montpellier side in need of a win to advance.

The out-of-sorts French champions are reeling after back-to-back losses to the Ospreys and have proved slow starters in the Champions Cup this season, losing the first half in all three pool-stage games.

That includes the reverse fixture against the attack-minded Exiles and recent efforts from Declan Kidney’s men suggest they can hang around in the early stages.

The curtain comes down on the pool stage with Saracens’ trip to Edinburgh, where the winners will lock up home advantage for the last 16.

Both teams are safely through to the next round but this game has been built up north of the border and a sell-out crowd is expected at the DAM Health Stadium.

Edinburgh ran Sarries close in the reverse fixture, losing by four points, and the visitors, who will be missing suspended fly-half Owen Farrell, have looked a little suspect in recent away games, making a repeat of the 45-0 thumping they handed out on their last visit to the Scottish capital unlikely.
