Match preview

Scotland’s status as a growing force on the international scene can be measured by their odds for this Test match with several bookmakers unable to split them and an Australia team on a five-game winning run.

Gregor Townsend’s men have shed the tag of plucky underdogs via some high-profile victories, beating England and France away from home in this year’s Six Nations, and the Wallabies know all too well how dangerous they can be.

Australia were embarrassed on their last visit to Murrayfield in 2017, suffering a 53-24 mauling having been beaten by the Scots in Sydney earlier that year.

They should be in good spirits for their return trip to Edinburgh though after a positive Rugby Championship campaign in which they finished second, beating world champions South Africa twice.

Australia have made significant improvements over the course of the year and now possess a formidable pack, while Andrew Kellaway has been a nice addition to the backs.

Kellaway has been scoring tries for fun since breaking into the team, bagging seven in six Rugby Championship appearances and is a fair price to cross again having been handed the start at full-back.

It’s an Australia team that has been significantly weakened by Quade Cooper and Samu Kerevi’s decision not to go on tour though and their absences could open the door for Scotland.

The Scots have drafted in the reinforcements from their 60-14 thrashing of Tonga with skipper Stuart Hogg and fly-half Finn Russell added to the line up.

It’s a team that contains six British & Irish Lions, while there’s enough quality on the bench to suggest they can see the game out, particularly as Australia have a tendency of running out of steam.

Another famous Scotland victory is there for the taking but expect it to be closer than their last engagement with six of the last seven meetings being decided by seven points or fewer.
