Match preview

Saracens have the chance to show they are still the yardstick to judge all Premiership title contenders by when they play host to leaders Leicester.

Sarries have settled back into life in the top flight nicely after a one-year absence, boasting the best attacking and defensive records in the division, and yet they find the Tigers sat in their usual spot in the table.

Four straight wins for Leicester have kept second-placed Saracens at arm's length, and Steve Borthwick’s side have opened up a 16-point lead with eight rounds to go.

Doing the double over Saracens would be a nice feather in the cap of a Tigers side eager to prove they are the Premiership's top dogs, Leicester having squeaked out a 13-12 win in October’s reverse fixture.

However, that victory was achieved via a late penalty try in an arm wrestle of a contest that Saracens thought they’d done enough to win.

The rematch should be equally tight with skipper George Ford recalled to lead a Leicester side that boasts a strong pack and excellent defensive gameplan.

The Tigers' forwards won’t be able to push around a powerful Saracens team though, while the hosts' attacking options have been improved by the return of Elliot Daly and Nick Tompkins.

On paper, the Premiership’s two class operators are evenly matched but there’s cause for concern with Leicester on the road, the Tigers having lost two of their last three away games.

Leicester haven’t been convincing on their travels since November and their last six away games in all competitions have been decided by nine points or less.

It could be that they just fall short against a Saracens team with an excellent home record and a point to prove.

Saracens were hurt by the loss at Welford Road and having had two weeks to prepare for this fixture, they are expected to come on strong.

Much like the first meeting, it could come down to the final few minutes and Saracens are trusted to be the ones to strike a decisive blow having scored a league-best 147 points in the final 20 minutes of games.
