Sale forged a reputation last season for winning without much to spare and they carried that on with a 20-19 home success over Bath in round one.

Of the Sharks’ 16 wins last season, 12 came by a margin of no more than 12 points, and they were by some distance the lowest scorers of the top four sides.

Irish began the season with a 36-24 defeat at last season's bottom side Worcester, and although they performed better at home last season than on the road, they look set to struggle against a side of the calibre of Sale.

However, only Exeter won by a double-figure margin at London Irish's Brentford home last season and with key internationals still missing Sale, who are three-point handicap favourites, will be happy to come away with any sort of a win
