Manchester United look a great bet to win the Champions League

What's your best bet of the weekend?

Manchester United to win at Fulham. It’s impossible to argue with what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is doing at United and they are on a roll which doesn’t look like stopping. Fulham are simply too open and too easy to play through. United should be able to carve them apart with real pace. Their strikers are all confident and scoring goals and they should be much too strong.

Which favourites look the most vulnerable?

Brighton should be opposed at home to rejuvenated Burnley. These are worrying times for Brighton, who are without a win in five Premier League games and are getting dragged back into the relegation fight. Wednesday night’s FA Cup slog at West Brom will have taken plenty out of them and the last thing they’ll need after that is a 90-minute showdown with a no-nonsense outfit like Burnley.

Where is the value in Man City v Chelsea on Sunday?

Probably City. I just can’t have Chelsea at the moment and that 5-0 thrashing of Huddersfield hides nothing. City look like a team who smell blood. They’ve had a few slips but seem to have got those out of their way now and no time at all after being written off they find themselves at the top of the table again.

Who will lift the Champions League trophy?

It looks absolutely wide open with no outstanding team. I could make a claim about probably nine or ten clubs, and Manchester United now have to be included. They are a huge price. The point about the Champions League is that it’s a two-part schedule and what happens in the first part is largely irrelevant. United under Solskjaer go into the knockout phase buzzing, take on PSG at the perfect time with Neymar out and they should fear no one.

And what about the Europa League?

Bookmakers seem to have little respect for Eintracht Frankfurt, who look serious challengers. In Luka Jovic, Ante Rebic and Sebastien Haller they boast one of the most lethal forward trios in Europe’s big leagues. Taking maximum points against Lazio and Marseille in the group stage was quite a feat and they are getting stronger. Red Bull Salzburg are also outsiders to consider. The runaway Austrian leaders got to the semis last season so they know what they are capable of.

Give us a winner for the midweek matches

I was impressed with Ajax in the Champions League group stage and felt they really should have pipped Bayern for top spot. That they didn’t perhaps tells us that they lack the ruthlessness that the very top teams have and that’s why I fear for them at home to Real Madrid. This isn’t a vintage Real team by any means but they know how to carve out key results when it matters.
