NFL playoffs preview

The NFL playoffs kick off this weekend with eight of the 12 teams in action, although history is not on their side.

Not since Baltimore in 2013 have a team gone from the wildcard round to Super Bowl glory, and the Ravens will be hoping to retain that record as number one seeds in the AFC.

They enter the post-season in flying form having won their last 12 games and are the rightful favourites to go on and capture the Vince Lombardi trophy. However, it remains to be seen how second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson handles the pressure. The Ravens were advised before the season at 40-1 there is little incentive for going in again.

Kansas City are the AFC’s number two seeds and have won their last six games, largely down to a vast defensive improvement. However, the possibility of facing a New England side who have had their number the last two times they have met in the playoffs is a deterrent.

The Chiefs beat the Patriots last month, but Bill Belichick’s side are a different animal come January and although they enter the playoffs at the wildcard round for the first time in ten years, the 16-1 about the current champs retaining their crown looks too big.

Despite their recent struggles, New England always seem to find a way to win in the postseason and quarterback Tom Brady relishes those big games, particularly when he has a point to prove.

They face a tough start when hosting a Tennessee team who are in fine form going into the playoffs. But both sides will no doubt be looking forward to the clash and have the talent to go all the way.

It is difficult to make a case for Houston, who have been too inconsistent this season to be regarded as potential Super Bowl contenders, while Buffalo’s hopes seem to depend solely on how their defence performs.

Over in the NFC, Green Bay make very little appeal despite being the number one seed. Eight of their 13 wins were by eight points or fewer, and their struggles against hapless Detroit last week won’t have boosted confidence.

Four of the last six top NFC seeds have reached the Super Bowl, but although San Francisco have been hot on both sides of the ball, they lost two of their last five and look a bit too short to be getting involved with.

New Orleans, on the other hand, who finished on the same 13-3 record, have averaged 40 points in their last four games and are a huge threat in both the passing and running game on offence, while their defence boasts plenty of talent. They were advised at 10-1 ante-post, but 13-2 still looks a good price given how well they have played all season.

Philadelphia made hard work for themselves and just about made the playoffs. But it would be a tall order for them to replicate their magic from two years ago, while Seattle’s hopes have taken a huge blow due to a crisis at running back.

Minnesota have beaten just one team with a winning record all season and are unlikely to be in the mix.
