One thing we can say with near-certainty about the opening NFL Week Six game between the Commanders and Bears is that it has to be better than last week's touchdown-free Thursday night offering between the Broncos and Colts.

It might not be much better, though, as both these teams have struggled mightily this season. The Commanders have lost four of their first five games, with quarterback Carson Wentz failing to make a positive impression after being traded from the Colts in the offseason. The Bears have two wins on the board, but their general level of play has been dreadful.

The sensible move has to be to side with the Commanders, who have the more talented overall roster and an offence that can at least complete a forward pass fairly competently.

The visitors are blessed with better weapons in their receiving corps in Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel. The Bears have barely trusted their own QB Justin Fields to throw passes this season, and the 208 passing yards he had in Sunday's loss to the Vikings was his best effort of the season.

The Commanders held Tennessee's star running back Derrick Henry to only 3.6 yards per carry and the Titans' offence as a whole to only 3.9 yards per play, so it's hard to see the Bears offence getting much going in this game.

Another interesting angle is that rookie head coaches, such as Chicago's Matt Eberflus, have a habit of struggling in Thursday games, which come with greatly reduced preparation time. First-year coaches are 8-19 against the handicap on Thursdays since 2015 after Denver's Nathaniel Hackett lost last week.
