Match preview

The defensive strength of the New England Patriots has propelled them towards the top of the AFC conference and now they have thei sights set on a Tennessee Titans team struggling to move the ball.

The Titans offence has floundered badly since losing Derrick Henry to injury, averaging 21.3 points per game in his absence, and now they'll be without each of their top three receivers for the trip to Foxborough. AJ Brown and Marcus Johnson both suffered injuries in the Week 11 loss to the Houston Texans, joining Julio Jones on the sidelines.

That's a recipe for disaster against a Patriots defence that is looking like the best unit in the league. The Pats have given up seven points or fewer in each of their past three games. Last time out, they shut out the Falcons and extended their winning streak to five games.

The Titans defence has also been on top of its game. Jeffery Simmons has wreaked havoc up the middle, while Harold Landry is a menace to opposition quarterbacks. There's also a lot of familiarity between the coaching staffs - Titans head coach Mike Vrabel played under Patriots chief Bill Belichick for nearly a decade and comes from his coaching tree.

When these teams last met in the playoffs in January 2020, the points tally reached just 33 as the Titans prevailed 20-13. Vrabel had an excellent defensive game-plan for then-quarterback Tom Brady, and Belichick completely dominated Ryan Tannehill.

Tannehill just threw four interceptions against the lowly Texans in a game where the Titans averaged 4.5 yards per play and now face a Patriots secondary that has recorded a league-leading 18 picks.

With top spot in the conference up for grabs, New England will be throwing everything at Tennessee, but expect the Titans defence to keep the visitors in the contest.

Key stat

Ryan Tannehill has thrown 12 interceptions this year after throwing only seven all of last season.
