Super Bowl LVI prop bets preview

Evan McPherson over 1.5 field goal attempts

To be a good kicker in the NFL you need two things: a strong leg and ice in your veins. Evan ‘Shooter’ McPherson has demonstrated both those qualities during Cincinnati's run to Super Bowl LVI and is unlikely to be overawed by the big stage. The rookie has nailed all 12 of his field-goal attempts in the playoffs, including making all three of his attempts from over 50 yards.

McPherson has become a big part of the Bengals offence, averaging 8.1 points per game during the regular season and that average has only increased in the playoffs with the Bengals attempting four field goals in each outing on the road to the Super Bowl.

Odell Beckham Jr over 62.5 receiving yards

The Rams rolled the dice on bringing in colourful character Odell Beckham Jr midway through the season and the gamble has paid off. The former Cleveland Brown has slowly carved out a vital role in LA’s offence and enjoyed his best match as a Ram in the NFC Championship game when catching nine passes for 113 yards.

Beckham is benefiting from lining up alongside the NFL’s top wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who attracts more attention from opposition defences, and has averaged 78.7 receiving yards in the playoffs as a result.

Joe Burrow over 10.5 rushing yards

Neither quarterback on show at the SoFi Stadium is known for their rushing skills but Joe Burrow has shown an ability to scramble and will likely need to escape pressure from the Rams defence.

Burrow has used his legs to good effect in the latter stages of the season, rushing for 25 yards in the AFC Championship game against the Chiefs, while he’s run for at least ten yards in four of his last six starts.

A field goal to be the first scoring play

Opposing touchdowns has been the way to approach the first-scoring play market in recent Super Bowls. A field goal has been responsible for the opening score in the last four years and in six of the last nine Super Bowls.

Both McPherson and Rams kicker Matt Gay have been used heavily during their respective teams’ playoff runs with a field goal opening the scoring in two of the Bengals’ last three games and two of the Rams’ previous four outings.

Von Miller to be named Super Bowl MVP

Given quarterbacks have been named Super Bowl MVP in 11 of the last 15 years, it’s no surprise to see Matthew Stafford and Joe Burrow dominant the market. But if the Rams are to win the Super Bowl then the big plays are likely to come from the defence.

Stopping the Rams’ sack leader Aaron Donald will be the top priority for the Bengals’ offensive line and that could leave Von Miller free to cause chaos.

Miller, a mid-season arrival from Denver, has grown into his role on the Rams defence, registering seven sacks in their last seven games.

There’s also a good narrative - always important in a prize voted for by the public - as Miller could be become the first non-quarterback to win multiple Super Bowl MVP awards.
