Match preview

The Detroit Lions need help from elsewhere to have a shot at the playoffs, but whether they get the result they need or not, they should relish their role as spoilers against the Green Bay Packers.

The equation for the Packers is simple; win and they are in the playoffs as the seventh seed. The Lions need the Seattle Seahawks to lose at home to the LA Rams earlier in the day and to beat the Packers to reach the postseason for the first time in six years.

Most neutrals will be rooting for a Seahawks loss to set up a winner-take-all NFC North showdown, in which Green Bay will be favoured having seemingly peaked at the right time.

The Packers have shown improvements on both sides of the ball and their defence stole the show in the Week 17 41-17 demolition of the Minnesota Vikings.

That performance was certainly a worry for Lions backers but Detroit are a far more balanced team than the Vikings, boasting an excellent offensive line and a bevy of weapons.

The Lions have broken the 30-point barrier in half of their 16 matches this season, hanging 41 points on the Chicago Bears last week, while their rushing attack has enjoyed great success all year and ran all over the Packers when recording a 15-9 victory in the reverse fixture.

That triumph over Green Bay in November sparked Detroit’s playoff push and they’ve gone 8-1 against the spread during that run.

Whether they are fighting for a playoff place or not come gametime, head coach Dan Campbell appears to be building a successful team in Detroit and they are unlikely to lay down at Lambeau.
