After fourth, third and second-place finishes at the Circuit of the Americas, Max Verstappen believes he can challenge for victory at this week’s United States Grand Prix.
But whatever happens over the rest of the weekend, Mercedes look likely to hold the upper hand in the early running.
A Mercedes driver has headed first practice at each of the last five races – including at Zandvoort where the Silver Arrows were no match for Verstappen’s Red Bull in the sessions that counted.
Austin has been a Mercedes stronghold over the years. They have won five of the last six races in Texas and taken every pole position since 2014.
Lewis Hamilton has won five of the eight F1 races staged at COTA and victory this weekend would see him climb back to the top of the championship standings.
The seven-time world champion was fastest by four-tenths of a second in the opening practice in Turkey last time, and this track should arguably suit his Mercedes even better than Istanbul.
