Race preview

Speedway fans are set to be treated to a thrilling two days of Grand Prix action as runaway leaders Artem Laguta and Bartosz Zmarzlik conclude their battle to lift the sports biggest prize around one of the best racing venues in the world.

Laguta stormed to his fourth Grand Prix victory of the campaign in Vojens three weeks ago to snatch a one-point lead from Zmarzlik going into this title-deciding Torun double-header.

Despite the narrow lead, bet365 still rate the hat-trick seeking Pole the 8-13 favourite, with the Russian available at 6-5 to claim the title.

Laguta undeniably has the gating, and arguably top speed, edge on his main rival, but he’s never been in championship contention before and is under immense pressure to become Russia’s first individual speedway world champion.

Zmarzlik, however, has fond memories of the Marian Rose MotoArena having clinched both his titles at the famous venue.

He’s reached the final in five of the last six Grand Prix events held in Torun, including taking top step of the podium last year, and will be spurred on by more than 15,000 passionate Polish fans.

The 26-year-old has remained in fine fettle since Vojens, excelling for his homeland in the Speedway of Nations semi-finals and chalking-up a hefty 14-point haul for Gorzow in the Polish Ekstraliga.

Emil Sayfudinov has struggled to match the raw speed of the championship protagonists but has recently changed engines and should go well enough to secure the overall bronze medal, while the speedy Maciej Janowski will relish the return to a circuit not so heavily reliant on gating and he could end a topsy-turvy campaign on a positive note.
