Speedway of Nations preview

Great Britain won their first world team title since 1978 last year and look to have a solid chance of retaining gold in the Speedway of Nations final in Vojens, Denmark, on Saturday.

The Lions were far from convincing in Thursday’s semi, requiring a qualifier race-off win against France to seal their spot in the final.

Not much went right for the reigning champions. A slow start to proceedings put them on the back foot, before Robert Lambert uncharacteristically touched the tapes against minnows Norway, resulting in an exclusion and ruling out any chance of automatic qualification.

Captained by triple world champion Tai Woffinden - arguably the best team rider in the world - Team GB looked much more assured when he partnered Wroclaw teammate Dan Bewley in the latter heats.

They must improve on their midweek showing, but they would have learned plenty and get the nod.

Of the other nations, Australia look strong medal contenders after topping the first semi-final on Wednesday, pipping surprise packages Finland.

Poland, the powerhouses of world speedway, also experimented with rider selection and required a race-off qualifier to advance to the final after struggling on the unpredictable track.

They are entitled to improve and can never be ruled out with Bartosz Zmarzlik in their ranks.

Denmark have home advantage and occupy favouritism after opting for the in-form trio of Leon Madsen, Mikkel Michelsen and Anders Thomsen.

But the competition format seeds the host nation straight through to the final and a lack of recent match practice on the Vojens shale could count against them.
