Marc Marquez's Thailand Grand Prix weekend got off to a bad start as the runaway championship leader took an unplanned trip to hospital after a crash in first practice.

The experience didn't seem to dent his speed or enthusiasm, though as he qualified a close third for the race.

Fabio Quartararo claimed his fourth pole position of the year. The Yamaha rookie edged out Maverick Vinales and Marquez, who was on a rapid lap when he crashed at turn five on his final attempt.

Quartararo has shown impressive pace all weekend but he is still looking for his first MotoGP victory.

The last time Marquez started third was at Jerez, where Quartararo was also on pole. Marquez went on to win that race.

Marquez can win a sixth world championship in Thailand if things go his way, but don't expect the Honda ace to settle for points if a win is available.

In a sensational season, Marquez has not been out of the first two except in Texas, where he crashed out of a huge lead.
