Marc Marquez faces a battle to take his sixth consecutive MotoGP victory in the Malaysian GP.

The recently crowned six-times world champion suffered a huge crash while trying to get a tow from Fabio Quartararo in Q2 and will start down in 11th - the first time he has been outside the top ten since 2015.

Scans revealed no broken bones but the Honda ace's legs are badly bruised and he will be racing in a lot of discomfort.

Quartararo heads an all-Yamaha front row ahead of Maverick Vinales, while Franco Morbidelli made it two Petronas Yamahas in the top three at the team's home circuit.

French rookie Quartararo heads the market to take his maiden MotoGP victory, but Vinales looks a better bet on the factory machine.

This is Quartararo's fifth pole position, and while his failure to convert any of the previous four into wins underplays his racecraft, he doesn't look one to back with confidence.

Vinales tends to get faster as a race progresses, and having been only a tenth of a second off the pole time the Spaniard looks the better value.
