Martin Vaculik won in Slovenia last year and he’s hit form at just the right time to suggest he can go close again.

Vaculik kicked off the 2017 season with victory in Krsko and went on to finish ninth in the standings.

He clearly likes the shale at the Stadion Matija Gubca and, having already won there once, he’ll be less bothered than some of his rivals that practice was cancelled yesterday because of poor weather.

The Slovakian has looked right back to his best in recent weeks with a fourth-place finish in Sweden followed two weeks later by victory in Poland, where he chalked up five wins in seven races.

Bad weather normally brings out the best in Matej Zagar but the home hero has had to withdraw because of concussion.

The betting is headed by championship leader Tai Woffinden and Bartosz Zmarzlik, the Pole who is 16 points behind the Englishman and narrowing the gap.
