Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying preview

Ferrari had been tipped to dominate in Hungary and all the signs on Friday pointed towards it being a strong weekend for the Italians.

The Scuderia’s superior downforce helped them top the timesheets in both practice sessions, while they were significantly quicker than the rest of the field during race simulation runs.

Bookmakers are therefore happy to stick with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc at odds-on to claim his eighth pole position of the season, and he certainly needs all the help he can get if he’s to trim Max Verstappen’s 63-point lead in the drivers standings heading into Formula 1’s summer break after this race.

However, the weather is threatening to play havoc in qualifying for a fourth time this season with thunderstorms forecast to frequent the Hungaroring on Saturday.

The last time drivers had to qualify in the wet, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz pulled out a blistering lap to snatch pole at Silverstone and the Spaniard is worth chancing to repeat that trick at a far more appealing price than his teammate.

Sainz has a fresh engine - installed before the French Grand Prix last weekend - and isn’t driving with the weight of expectation Leclerc is currently carrying.

McLaren's Lando Norris usually performs well in the wet, taking third place on the grid for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, and he appeared to have the measure of the Hungaroring on Friday.

The Brit set the fourth and second-fastest times in the two practice sessions and is worth a dart to secure the second pole of his career.
