Lewis Hamilton lost the championship lead by finishing second to Max Verstappen at last week’s Dutch Grand Prix, but the Briton will be hopeful of hitting back on a very different circuit at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.

In contrast to the twisting Zandvoort track, power rules at Monza and having shown impressive straight-line speed this season, Hamilton’s Mercedes could have the edge this week.

As at Silverstone in July, the Italian event will feature a sprint race on Saturday to decide the final grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

But the sprint race starting order will be settled by a traditional qualifying session on Friday afternoon, following a single hour of practice. Hamilton looks the pick to go fastest in qualifying, as he did at Silverstone.

It has been an eventful week in F1, with George Russell announced as Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate for 2022. Current incumbent Valtteri Bottas will move to Alfa Romeo in place of the retiring Kimi Raikkonen, while ex-Red Bull racer Alex Albon will return next season with Williams.
